Anxiety is much more than worry and overwhelm.
Anxiety Disorders
Are you grappling with overwhelming feelings of anxiety and fear that significantly impact your social, occupational, and personal functioning?
More than once, I've encountered new clients who are unsure of the diagnosis given to them. "I have anxiety," they would report. "Tell me more," would be my follow-up. "Just anxiety," they would respond.
Anxiety transcends mere worry and overwhelm—it's an umbrella term encompassing complex layers beneath the surface.
For some, anxiety manifests as a visceral betrayal of the body, with intense and persistent physiological reactions to anticipated or unexpected situations, independent of distorted thoughts (distorted cognitions). For others, anxiety manifests as unrelenting fear and worry, sometimes grounded in reality, sometimes irrational, leading to catastrophic thinking linked to physical sensations.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) views anxiety and anxiety disorders through the lens of internal conflicts and interactions among different parts. IFS provides a framework for understanding anxiety as a complex interplay among protectors, exiles and Self, offering a path towards healing through self-awareness, compassion, and integration.
Understanding these nuances is crucial; from panic disorder to social anxiety disorder and to generalized anxiety disorder, each presenting with distinct characteristics. When compounded with comorbidities such as an eating disorder, OCD, ADHD, ASD, or addiction, the complexity deepens.
I can help you understand what's happening in your body, how your anxiety may have evolved, and how it intersects with other disorders. I'll equip you with coping strategies, help map new systems of safety, and listen to how anxiety impedes your authentic self-expression. Effective treatment requires a clinician who can navigate these intricate challenges.
Your anxiety, physical feedback loops, and thought processes are as unique as you are, deserving of a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
Anxiety can be profoundly debilitating, often underestimated by others.
Rest assured, I recognize its impact and am committed to supporting you through it.
